Overview

Keita Yamato was born in Yamaguchi City in 1985 as the second son of master Hagi potter Kiyoshi Yamato. He graduated from Osaka Art College in Association with Osaka University of Arts in 2006 and later trained and worked under his father.

Gallery Statement

Keita Yamato made his debut in the Uk with our 'Generations - Father & Son' exhibition in 2021 exhibiting works alongside his father, Kiyoshi Yamato. It was clear to see the influence obtained from his father's work and development of Hagi tradition but evident also was Keita san's departure from Hagi tradition, seen mostly in his free formed sculptural works. Keita san possesses a wonderful eye for expression in his work and has managed to encourage truly remarkable firing outcomes from the wood fired kiln he shares with his father. His traditional Hagi wares also offer us something respectfully tied to the legacy Hagi style but also fresh with styling of form. The Yamato family lineage looks to be safe in young Keita san's skilful hands.
