We are delighted to be staging the third solo show from acclaimed British artist David Storey this April.
It was two years ago that David Storey's solo exhibition, 'In my mind', captured the imagination of so many of our clients resulting in a show that is still discussed with us today. On April 5th 2025 we will be unveiling his new paintings in the gallery. Paintings that continue to document his fascination with the emotion stirred by recollections on the edge of living memory.
Gallery Opening: Saturday 5th April, 3pm
David Storey will be in attendance.
'Stepping Stones' in the artist's words.
'My paintings are an exploration of memory and offer ‘glimpsed’ or half-remembered figures standing silently on the edge of living memory, rescued from a personal archive of the forgotten.
I’m drawn to historical images that are slightly out of my time, or maybe from my time but when I was young – that way my response can be more detached. Having selected a composition that resonates I embark on a quest to unlock the essence in a way that is somehow extra-visual
This journey of development and discovery can take anything from 5 days to 5 years until a kind of alchemy takes place and things seem to harmonise of their own accord in a way that can be very rewarding.
I like to paint in an expressionistic way using rags and sponges because the physical marks and textures are a fundamental element of what I’m trying to achieve. The challenge for me though is to retain an economy of execution – an effortless effort.
After studying at Hornsey College of Art and Middlesex University in London I worked as a record sleeve artist – but for the last 25 years I’ve focused entirely on painting, developing a way of working that continues to evolve.
‘Stepping Stones’ is my latest solo exhibition at the lovely Stratford Gallery and showcases the new paintings I’ve created over the last 12 months. I’m grateful to Emma and Howard for making the trip to my Brighton studio, on two occasions, in order to input on the progress of the paintings, and for their support and encouragement throughout the process.'
