Sayaka Shingu & Mayumi Nakamura - New Ceramics as part of Little Wing

07 May 2026 - 30 May 2026

Overview

Little Wing brings together the work of three female artists whose practices engage with nature not as subject matter alone, but as a condition of continual transformation.

Alongside Helen Ballardie’s paintings, the exhibition includes ceramic works by Japanese artists Sayaka Shingu and Mayumi Nakamura. Their inclusion was a deliberate curatorial decision — not to provide contrast, but to deepen and expand the visual and emotional space opened up by Ballardie’s work.

Though materially distinct, all three artists share an attentiveness to the rhythms of the natural world: bloom and decay, growth and erosion, fragility and resilience. Helen’s paintings immerse us within dense, shifting landscapes where forms emerge and dissolve through layered mark-making. Sayaka Shingu’s porcelain works draw that attention inward, isolating delicate floral moments that seem suspended between flourishing and fading. Mayumi Nakamura’s ceramics, by contrast, feel elemental and geological — surfaces built through accumulation, fracture, heat, and material change.

Together, the exhibition moves between intimacy and expansiveness, stillness and movement. Across painting and clay, nature is not presented as fixed or decorative, but as something living, unstable, and perpetually in flux.

Sayaka Shingu & Mayumi Nakamura's work will be released on our website at 7pm on Friday 8th May.
It will be viewable in the gallery from 3pm Saturday 9th May
.
