Hideki Goto | Shadow Glaze

27 March 2026 - 09 April 2026

Overview

Hideki Goto works in Tajimi — the historic centre of Mino ceramics, and one of the great kiln cities of Japan. His practice is built on an intimate knowledge of Shino and in this solo collection of new works he has agreed to create a new interpretation of Nezumi Shino: that most atmospheric of glazes, iron-grey and smouldering, contrasted with an unctuous feldspar glaze born in the Momoyama period and carried forward through centuries of unbroken kiln tradition.

Shadow Glaze brings a new body of work to The Stratford Gallery — vessels that move between the ancient and the utterly contemporary, their surfaces holding the trace of fire, ash and time. Raw, considered and achingly beautiful.

Goto san studied under and continues to assist Shino master Ichiro Hori. His work is rare in the UK. This exhibition is not to be missed.
