We are modern and better than that and we have learned to prefer metaphor's ambiguities to simile's allusions. But there are times when clarity seems appropriate and the clumsy simile wins. Perhaps we are living through one of those times? This was certainly on my mind when I gave myself over to this painting in which the figures are not so much 'not seeing the wood for the trees' as they are not seeing each other.
