It's hard to express just how much we love the work of Aaron Scythe. In this new collection of work we see his very latest styles emerge with his trademark and boundless creativity. Rich deep green oribe glaze meets kuro oribe, painted Kiseto and porcelain yobitsugi, combining in energetic yet balanced harmony. Many of the new pieces now revealing brightly coloured staples, a spirited nod to long gone techniques of bonding pottery sherds, delivered in Scythe's signature offbeat manner. Truly wonderful yet again.
Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Aaron Scythe trained in ceramics in Sydney in the late 1980s where he also developed an initial interest in Momoyama Mino pots. In 1995, he travelled to Japan where, under Koie Ryoi, he studied the Minoyaki style of pottery. He has experimented with Shino glazes, Oribe and Kiseto ware and also porcelain work. Whilst based in Japan, Scythe had over 60 solo exhibitions.
Although Scythe’s main influence is taken from the Momoyama period in Japan, he uses reflections of the modern world to build on ancient traditions towards something new. He enjoys challenging himself to create something different whilst remaining in the confines of Japanese traditions, for example the simple forms of tea bowls, vases and guinomis.
