Born in Kagoshima Prefecture in 1975, Shintaro Uchimura originally trained as an engineer before leaving that profession to pursue ceramics, inspired by his deep admiration for the great wares of Korea and Japan's Momoyama period. Establishing an independent studio in 2002, he has since developed a practice centred upon the enduring philosophy of early Japanese ceramics rather than simply their appearance.
Uchimura san's work reflects a profound understanding of the aesthetic principles associated with Sen no Rikyū and the formative influence of Korean ceramics upon Japanese tea culture.
