Malcolm Martin & Gaynor Dowling

Overview

Malcolm and Gaynor make sculpture in wood, from half-ton monumental forms for a secret garden, to vessels sewn together from sections of veneer weighing a few grammes. They work together on every stage of the pieces, and have been collaborating full time since 1997. What all of their pieces share is the central role of the hand and of hand tools, primarily through carving.

Working on different bodies of work concurrently, they continue to create their series of still life groupings in monochrome scorched and limed oak, at the same time as making significant single pieces.

One of their most significant experiences as makers was their three month residency at the Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia, investigating combining traditional carving techniques with stitching and working with veneers.

Malcolm and Gaynor have lived and worked together in Gloucestershire since 1997 and have works held in over a dozen museum and public collections.
