2024 - Soul of Japan - The Ceramics of Iga, The Stratford Gallery, United Kingdom

Hiroyumi Suzuki's works were first debuted by the gallery in our exhibition 'Soul of Japan - The Ceramics of Iga' in August 2024. What struck us immediately upon studying his work is how consistently characterful it is. Rare for a mid career artist to have found such a strong voice and personal style that is progressive and yet true to its ancestry. His work marries bearing witness to Iga's 'clay flavour' with a skilfully fired outcome of subtle biidoro, the naturally occurring glassy glaze from melted wood ash. Somewhere between silver birch bark and emeralds stands his style, gentle, beautiful and very accomplished.
