Hideki Goto

Overview

Goto san was born in Miyagi Prefecture in 1973 and is a leading contemporary ceramic artist based near Tajimi City in Gifu prefecture, home to a long line of historic figures in various Japanese ceramic traditions. He studied ceramics in Tajimi and went on to establish his own studio and kiln there shortly after graduating. He also has a close association with Shino legend Ichiro Hori and, still to this day, assists Hori san with his wood firings. The influence of this can be seen in the splendid versions of shino in his work which are rich, complex and unctuous. He is interested in the prehistoric origins of ceramics and the human relationship to it.
