Eddie Curtis

Overview

Born in 1953, Eddie Curtis' career in ceramics started back in 1973 when he studied for his BA in ceramics at the Bath Academy of Art. From here, Eddie worked tirelessly in his home town of Seaham as a repetition thrower before he then took up employment in heavy industry to raise finance for the purchase of Middle Rigg in 1979, the workshop where he and his wife Margaret continue to work today.

His very first collections were oven to tableware, but over his career his focus has shifted to more sculptural works. His reputation grew as highly respected Ceramic Artist through his mastery of Copper Reds in the early 2000s. In 2010, he and Margaret were invited to show at Rufford Craft Centre for their two person show, 'Curtis Red'. A hugely successful show followed by his acclaimed solo show at Galerie Metzger near Aschaffenburg, Germany.

Around this time, Eddie paid a chance visit to a stretch of coastline near to his home town, locally known as 'The Blast'. This led to 'The Blast Series', a series that he continues to work on today and which has been shown extensively throughout the UK, Mainland Europe, New Delhi, New York, Michigan and Tokyo. Eddie has exhibited globally, and is collected within both important private and public collections including the Ashmoleum Museum Oxford, Aberystwyth University, Kolumba and Grassi Museum, Leipzig. His work continues to command considerable international repute.
