Breathe

Breathe

Featuring the work of Malcolm Martin & Gaynor Dowling, James Hake, Kerry Harding and Jane Ansell.

This exhibition explores the relationship we have to our natural world and how, through nature’s part within the creative process, we can immortalise what it yields to us, be it wood, clay, ash or its very own scenic beauty. Debuting in this show is the sublime sculptural work of Malcom Martin and Gaynor Dowling who have elevated sculpture in wood to the highest level of artistic success. Their work is held in several museum collections worldwide including The Boston and Philadelphia Museums of Fine Art and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, and has been exhibited internationally. Kerry Harding makes a return to the gallery for her first large collection of paintings after a successful debut in early summer. She will be providing a large collection of new works which seek to deconstruct and re-construe landscapes with arresting depth and subtlety. James Hake also returns to the gallery with a major collection of brand new work. James has been a gallery favourite with our clients since 2016 and we are delighted that “Breathe” sees a large scale return of his work here. James is a master in glaze formulation and manipulation, his vessels adorned with fluid fusions of ancient Chinese glaze types including Nuka ash glazes, iron rich Tenmoku and cloud like Chun. The exhibition is also joined by the return of Jane Ansell’s moving takes on British landscape and out relationship to it. Her paintings have always been fabulously received and for ‘Breathe’ she is providing us with new works that showcase her ability to make paintings that transport us to a twilight world and perception of natural beauty.

In all line of order

An exhibition of new paintings. The paintings in this series describe a state of flux, the change from day into night, summer into winter, outward into inward. The shadows grow tall across the land. Along the river banks there are dark corners and hidden spaces. The world rotates into Autumn and Summer falls to the pathways in a confetti of petals and leaves. The winds change and the birds are blown southward in elegant displays like feathered acrobats against the clouds. Decay, woodsmoke, distant flames…the smell of life in death and death in life. Inwardly turning the land becomes darker but the skies still rage with colour at dusk. Although shadows and veils race across each surface, the work holds a warmth in its heart. Although each painting is a riddle of obscured spaces and drifting mists the flames burn in the distance like dreams.
