Toru Ichikawa

Overview

Toru Ichikawa was born in Tokyo in 1973. He studied and learnt the Bizen traditions under famous Bizen master Ryuichi Kakurezaki (b. 1953) from 2011- 2015. After this, Ichikawa san became established independently. His inventions are daring and striking in their various coloured glazes which shock and excite. He presents us with a contemporary image of what can be still used and adored as a traditional ceramic vessel.

Ichikawa san has been the subject of extensive solo shows in Japan and is considered one of the most adventurous and avant garde ceramic artists currently active there, working freely between modernity and tradition and using both old and new materials.
