Kato san was born in Japan in 1963. All her life she has had an affinity with the arts, first studying literature at the Doshisha Women's Collecge in Kyoto from 1980-83. Subsequently she decided to pursue ceramics and attended Tokoname City Ceramics Institute from 1984 to 1986. Whilst there she also apprenticed to Asako Watanabe.
Her porcelain works feature slab built forms with torn non prescribed outcomes, allowing the process to suggest pleasing results, They are highly collected and coveted works for their subtlety, sophistication and restraint. She continues to exhibit extensively in Japan and the USA where her work is help in several museums. The Stratford Gallery is proud to have introduced her work to the United Kingdom.
