Richard Milgrim

Overview

Richard is an American born ceramic artists who has lived and worked in Japan for the last 40 years. His original fascination was with the Japanese Tea Ceremony, Chanoyu, which lead him to the vessels used for its performance. At this time it was highly unusual for a Westerner to dedicate themselves to the deep understanding of this most ingrained element of Japanese culture. However in 1979 his passion and dedication was supported by the 15th generation Grand Master of the Urasenke tea tradition, Dr Sen Genshitsu, still a mentor to this day.

Richard is one of the very few Western potters to gain such approval for his work in Japan, a country that he has long been regarded by him as home. His time and practice in Japan has seen him earn the highest global respect for his work which is collected internationally and highly treasured in Japan.

His work has won numerous awards, been selected several times for the Japan National Ceramic Art Biennale and continues to be the subject of solo exhibitions throughout Japan. His work is rarely seen in the UK.
