Kate Boxer

Overview

Kate Boxer is a painter and print-maker living and working in South East England. Born in Sussex in 1961, Boxer studied in London Art Schools in the early 1990s and has been exhibiting since 1994. Working with oil pastels, gouache, drypoint etching and collage, her paintings and drawings act as speculative arenas where animals and humans coalesce, the boundaries and hierarchies between the two blurring with a whimsical yet deeply insightful touch. Her subjects span iconic individuals from history and fiction such as Batman, Napoleon, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Queen Victoria, accompanied by an array of wild creatures : dogs, wolves, rabbits, bulls. Boxer adorns her animal subjects with the same iconic status as their human counterparts : they exude an individuality and eccentricity independent from human categorisation or personification.
